Card Flip

Find all matching pairs before time runs out!

Info

Card Flip

A classic memory card game with 16 face-down emoji cards hiding 8 matching pairs. Flip two cards at a time — if they match, they stay face up; if not, they flip back down. Find all eight pairs before the 60-second timer runs out. Your score is based on how much time you have left and how few flips you used.

How to Play

About This Game

Card Flip is a faithful implementation of the concentration card game, one of the oldest memory challenges in existence. The 4×4 grid of 16 cards (8 pairs) is the sweet spot for single-session play: small enough to complete in under a minute with good memory, large enough to tax short-term recall on a first run. The emoji icons are used as card faces because they are visually distinctive, universally recognizable, and require no specialized knowledge — any player anywhere can identify a dragon or a star without ambiguity.

The 60-second time limit creates pressure without being punishing for casual players. A methodical player who has seen every card once can typically complete the grid in 30–45 seconds; competitive players aiming for maximum score try to compress that to 20–25 seconds by maintaining a reliable mental map rather than relying on lucky guesses.

The scoring formula rewards both speed and efficiency. Time remaining contributes the bulk of the score, while excess flips apply a small penalty. This means the optimal play is not just remembering pairs but doing so in the minimum number of exposures — never flipping a card you already know the identity of, and always making your second flip count as a match when possible.

Why We Built It

Memory training games have measurable cognitive benefits, particularly for short-term spatial memory and pattern retention. Card Flip packages these benefits inside a universally familiar format that needs zero explanation. The card-flip animation uses CSS 3D transforms for a smooth flip effect without any JavaScript animation library, and the layout adapts from narrow phone screens to wide desktop displays using responsive CSS grid. Because all game state lives in JavaScript variables — no server, no database — it works offline and loads instantly.
